An Tobar, Tobermory

A gentle Italian comedy filled with pathos and the hope for romance.

Gianni lives in Rome. He has an aristocratic and demanding mother whose vitality for life puts stress on his finances; he panders to his estranged wife while both still living under the same roof and his daughter’s lazy boyfriend gets on his nerves. For Gianni, life as a retiree becomes increasingly frustrating as he tires of being invisible. Spurred on by the extracurricular love lives of his friends he decides it is time to find a lover, but will the young women he pursues see him as the romantic hero? Far from becoming a sleazy lothario, his gentlemanly but misguided attempts at wooing prove he has much to learn about the art of modern seduction. The latest offering from Gianni di Gregorio, writer and director of the acclaimed Mid-August Lunch, this gentle comedy is part-autobiographical and part-improvised, a film that paints a picture of one man’s quiet crisis with everyday existence filled with humour and pathos and set against the romantic and luscious city of Rome.

“conveys the pangs of ageing with a gentle if regretful wit whose charm is reinforced by the impeccable script and deft playing.” – Empire

“a kind of romantic realist-fantasia with Fellini in its DNA, and a little of Woody Allen.” – The Guardian
