An Tobar, Tobermory

High on a hill stood a lonely goatherd

Living in isolation in the hills of southern Italy, an elderly goatherd abides by ancient traditions and natural laws in an attempt to heal himself, protect his goats and keep pace with the changing times.  Described as a “cinematic poem”, this documentary from architect-turned-artist Michelangelo Frammartino features no audible dialogue. Instead, it acts as a stunning visual guide to life in this medieval settlement: revealing the superstitions, daily interactions and livelihoods of its inhabitants. Taking its title from the musings of Pythagoras, the film shows human nature in all its diversity and encourages the audience to meditate on all aspects of life, animate or otherwise, that help shape our existence.
